APTR Awards Program

APTR nationally recognizes outstanding individuals and academic programs for achievement in the field of prevention and public health education. Since 1974, the APTR Awards Program has honored those who have made significant contributions in the areas of prevention and public health teaching, research, and service.

Awards will be presented at the APTR Luncheon on Tuesday, March 3, 2020 during TEACHING PREVENTION 2020: Fostering Population Health & Advancing Prevention Science.

Duncan Clark Award

Presented to an APTR member with a distinguished record of achievement in the areas of teaching, research and/or advocacy in the field of public health and preventive medicine. This award is named after a founding member of the association.  View Past Duncan Clark Awardees


  • Nominated individual must be a current APTR member
  • Self-nominations are permitted

F. Marian Bishop Educator of the Year Award

Presented annually, this award recognizes educators who have contributed to the instruction of students or residents in the field of public health and prevention. View Past Marian Bishop Educator Awardees


  • Nominated individual must be a current APTR Member
  • Self-nominations are permitted

Outstanding Educational Program Award 

This award honors an innovative program, department or academic institution for advancing education in prevention and public health. Individuals responsible for the establishment, success, growth, or management of the academic program which furthers students' interest in the field are honored. View Past Program Awardees


  • Program must be a current Institutional APTR Member

Special Recognition

Periodically, APTR recognizes that an individual, agency, or organization outside of the APTR membership has provided outstanding service and support to APTR, our members, and to the field of prevention and public health. View Past Special Recognition Awardees


  • Nominated individual does not require membership in APTR.
  • Nominated individual cannot be from an academic institution or a current faculty member.

Call for Nominations 

Nomination Procedures

In order to nominate an individual and/or program please complete the online nomination form(s) and include all required supporting documents.

All nominations must include:

  • Letter of support illustrating why the nominated individual and/or program is worthy of the award.
  • Current curriculum vitae of the nominee
  • One-page biographical statement of the nominee for all but the Program Award.

Outstanding Educational Program of the Year Award must include:

  • A description of the nominate program.

Additional information that supports your reason for nomination is encouraged. This may include:

  • Career highlights, service, publications, honors and awards
  • Additional supporting documents should not exceed 10 pages in length


The deadline for receipt of all nominations materials for 2020 is Monday, November 11, 2019.

Selection Process

Selections are made by the APTR Awards Committee. Notifications will occur in mid-December.
