Case in Point: A Problem-Solving Experience in Population Health
simulates the experience of working in interprofessional teams to respond to a population health crisis. The experience is designed to strengthen skills in communications, leadership, and problem solving by challenging professionals to view a public health problem from multiple perspectives. The case study experience was customized for use at orientation for CDC fellows, but is published broadly to serve as a teaching resource and a professional development opportunity for state and local departments of health as well.

Case in Point was developed by the Emory Centers for Training and Technical Assistance through a workforce improvement project with APTR and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). This workforce improvement project was established to respond to a critical need for interprofessional training materials specific to population health problem-solving for CDC fellows and public health agencies.

The experience is intended for in-person delivery, as it requires extensive teamwork and includes opportunities to debrief and discuss across teams. However, the timeline and structure of Case in Point are designed to be flexible, to ensure organizations of all sizes and expertise can implement the exercise successfully. The exercise includes a Flint Water Crisis case study, but the structure and activities of Case in Point can be used with any population health scenario. The published materials include participant tools, implementation and planning materials, and instructions for modifying the case study and population perspectives.
