On Tuesday, January 15, 2013 APTR attended a meeting hosted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Scientific Education and Professional Development Program Office to introduce APTR to the CDC Centers, Institutes, and Offices and announce our new CDC Cooperative Agreement with Academia.

APTR Executive Director and staff attended along with staff from the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN), Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC), and Association of Schools of Public Health (ASPH).  Each organization presented information about their membership, missions, priorities, and project successes, as well as information on past projects and fellowship opportunities funded through the APTR-CDC Cooperative Agreement.

The new cooperative agreement was awarded to the APTR and the other organizations in August 2012 with the goal of enhancing collaboration between CDC and academia to strengthen public health workforce capacity.

Through the APTR-CDC Cooperateive Agreement, APTR will work with CDC to support projects focused on workforce improvement, continue administering fellowships for graduates of APTR member mph programs and health professions schools; and begin developing the Centers for Innovation in Improving Health (CIIHs).

Funding and fellowship opportunities will be announced to the APTR membership and posted on the APTR website when available.

I hope the eligibility requirements for this fellowships do not limit the applicant pool to recent graduates or some permutation of such requirement, which essentially excludes many prospective candidates that have a lot to offer but for various reasons have experienced a prolonged carreer stagnation. For my sake and other health professionals facing similar predicaments, I hope the eligibility requirements allow for an applicant pool is more inclusive.
