Easier Said Than Communicated: Developing Effective Messaging and Tools for Communicating about Health Equity

This is the first in the Teaching Prevention Webinar Series inspired by popular, highly engaging presentations from the Teaching Prevention annual conferences.

In this webinar, Dr. Isa Miles will share details and findings from health equity message testing conducted by the CDC Office of Health Equity (OHE). This initiative aims to provide public health professionals and health educators with concrete tools and resources to support their efforts to communicate about, and advance, health equity. This webinar will be especially valuable for health promotion, communication, and education students and professionals, and for anyone seeking to advance health equity. 

 
Learning Objectives:
  • Explain how the Office of Minority Health and Health Equity is working to expand the knowledge base on developing and framing health equity messages.
  • Describe findings and recommendations from message testing with general audiences and health professionals about concepts related to equity, health equity, and social determinants of health.
  • Demonstrate how message testing can be used to develop resources to effectively communicate about health equity including a series of brief and compelling whiteboard videos.

Isa Miles

Dr. Isa Miles is a Senior Health Communication Specialist in CDC’s Office of Health Equity. Her prior positions include Senior Communication Advisor in the HIV Prevention Branch of the Division of Global HIV and TB at CDC, Health Communication Strategist and Content Team Lead at Banyan Communications, and both a Health Communication Specialist and a Behavioral Scientist across two branches in the Division of HIV Prevention at CDC. Dr. Miles has developed and implemented national HIV prevention media campaigns, led formative research activities for a variety of public health initiatives, written scripts for numerous video trainings and PSAs and content for a variety of other platforms, developed trainings about social behavior change communication for scientists and physicians in global settings, and developed and led health communication strategies and initiatives to address complex public health challenges both in the U.S. and globally.

Dr. Miles is a graduate of Howard University (B.S.) and Harvard University School of Public Health (M.S. and Sc.D). She completed a Kellogg post-doctoral fellowship in community based participatory research at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and is a former CDC Epidemic Intelligence Service Officer.
