APTR Urges Swift Passage of House-passed $46.4 Billion for NIH

APTR is among 314 organizations and institutions that greatly appreciates how both the House-passed (H.R. 4502) and Senate draft Labor-HHSEducation spending bills include strong increases for the NIH base in FY 2022, which would
provide greater hope and opportunity for every patient awaiting a cure, every researcher
working toward the next breakthrough, and every aspiring scientist considering a career in the
lab.

To maximize the potential of medical research to make rapid progress toward these
goals, APTR urges providing at least $46.4 billion for NIH’s base. Continuing the momentum of the prior six years of bipartisan support for
meaningful funding growth in the NIH’s existing institutes and centers is key to ensuring that the
nation can continue to accelerate the development of life-changing cures, pioneering treatments
and diagnostics, and innovative preventive strategies.

Access Full Sign-On Letter

This represents the highest Impact Factor in the journal’s 36-year history and a significant jump from the 2019 score. A journal’s Impact Factor is one of several key metrics used to quantify a journal’s reach, calculated using a formula that compares the number of citations of journal items published in a 2-year period with the number of articles published in that period. Journals with Impact Factors above 5 are widely held to be high impact journals.

This increase comes as AJPM has seen a record number of submissions—2,082—in 2020, with 2021 on track to match or surpass the 2020 figure. Taken together, these are signs that AJPM continues to serve as the premier scholarly journal for the publication of research on prevention science, education, practice, and policy for a global audience.

APTR Urges Congress to Include Support for Physician Training in Upcoming Infrastructure Bill

APTR has joined the Association of American Medical Colleges GME Advocacy Coalition in support of increasing Medicare-supported GME in the upcoming infrastructure package. APTR signed-on to a letter sent to President Biden, Majority Leader Schumer, Speaker Pelosi, Minority Leader McConnell, and Minority Leader McCarthy urging federal support for physician training be included in upcoming legislative efforts to improve the nation’s infrastructure. Physicians are a vital part of our health care infrastructure, and it is critical that we train more in order to meet the needs of our diverse and growing nation, ensure patient access to care, and prepare for the next public health crisis.

The United States is facing a shortage of between 54,100 and 139,000 physicians by 2033 – a dearth that is almost certain to be exacerbated by rising rates of physician burnout and early retirement due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The physician workforce, much like our population, is aging, with nearly 45 percent of active physicians in the United States being age 55 and older. Access issues persist for patients in both rural and urban underserved communities, and in both primary and specialty care, and it is crucial that we invest in our country’s health care infrastructure by helping provide them with the physicians they need and improved access care.

View the Letter

APTR Releases Statement on Capitol Violence

APTR Statement on Capitol Violence

APTR condemns violence and hate in all forms. The image of a mob storming our Capitol building and the assault on our democracy had a chilling effect on us all. The response to the insurrection highlights, yet again, the inequitable treatment of our BIPOC community by some law enforcement and citizens. APTR continues to support our membership in educating the next generation of health professionals, particularly when science denial is encouraged amid a global pandemic, a climate crisis, and the epidemic of racism. We look forward to working with the incoming administration on advancing prevention and population health education, research, and service.
