AAVMC /APTR One Health Interprofessional Education Working Group
The Association for Prevention Teaching and Research (APTR) Healthy People Curriculum Task Force (HPCTF) collaborated with the Association of American Veterinary Medical Colleges (AAVMC) to convene a Working Group around the One Health Interprofessional Education Initiative. This initiative seeks to integrate One Health concepts into the degree programs of health professions students through the case study method of instruction.
The Working Group has developed a broad-based One Health Educational Framework designed for use in all health professions education. The One Health Case Study project aims to engage faculty in developing interprofessional teaching cases as well as case studies specific to an individual field of study.
One Health is the collaborative effort of multiple disciplines – working locally, nationally, and globally – to attain optimal health for people, animals and our environment. The One Health initiative focuses attention on the importance of the connections between human health, animal health, and ecosystem health. The recent Ebola and Zika virus outbreaks, along with the growing recognition of the importance of antimicrobial resistance, a spectrum of emerging and re-emerging diseases, as well as the positive benefits of human-animal interactions, is bringing One Health concepts to the attention of health professions educators.
The Working Group sought proposals for new, previously unpublished case studies. Case studies describing the participation of individuals from different professional disciplines and developed by faculty from more than one health profession were highly encouraged. After peer review, case studies were published on the AAVMC and APTR websites and widely disseminated to health professions educators.
The lead author of each published case study is designated a "One Health Scholar" by the Association of American Veterinary Medical Colleges and received a stipend of $1,000. The lead authors of up to five exemplary case studies presented their case studies at the AAVMC Annual Conference in Washington, DC from March 4-6, 2016.
One Health Interprofessional Education Webinar
APTR and AAVMC are pleased to present the One Health Interprofessional Education Webinar which highlights four case studies available for use by instructors from a variety of health professions. Emerging infectious disease threats, as well as growing awareness about the dangers of antimicrobial resistance and the positive benefits of human-animal interactions are bringing One Health concepts to the attention of many educators in the health professions.
