Due to decisions of the current administration, this program is paused indefinitely. |
Since 1993, the Association for Prevention Teaching and Research (APTR) offered rotations for preventive medicine residents and primary care residents with the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) Program, based at the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ). The clinical preventive medicine rotation at AHRQ provided an in-depth experience in the process of developing evidence-based recommendations.

This is a welcoming environment that provides well-developed structured learning and opportunities for hands-on engagement with the process. I was able to practice critical public health skills in a real-world setting and was delighted to find a community with AHRQ coresidents and wonderful mentorship as well! |
This was a great experience! I highly recommend it to any Preventive Medicine residents thinking about going into governmental and/or policy work. |

This rotation was a highlight of my medical training. I saw large scale decisions being deliberated on by the task force members. I learned about the USPSTF methodologies and how evidence is considered for such big decisions. I contributed to a variety of projects, including reference check on a draft statement, clinical vignettes for American Family Physician, and a journal club. My program director reported he saw improvement in my writing after this rotation. Most of all, the medical officers are incredibly kind and provided education, mentorship and career guidance. As a Preventive Medicine fellow, this has been a wonderful way to see prevention put into action. |

Honestly, the APTR/AHRQ residency rotation program with the US Preventive Task Force will be a highlight of both my residency and my career. |

I've been looking forward to participating in this rotation for over a decade, since I first decided that Preventive Medicine was going to be one of the specialties I pursued in my career. Even with all that buildup, this rotation was exceptional and exceeded all my expectations. I know there is likely something to being "in-person", but the fully remote nature of my rotation allowed me ample time and opportunity to explore other interests and research going on at AHRQ while still fulfilling my duties toward the rotation. It was quite impressive to see the breadth and depth of work being done to further health. For any resident even slightly considering this rotation, I would give it my unreserved endorsement. The Medical Officers are engaging, value the input of their residents, and are quick to provide assistance when asked. I only wish the incredible experience could have lasted longer! |
I enjoyed this opportunity to work with a federal healthcare agency during residency, and deepened my understanding and appreciation of the methods and processes used by the USPSTF. This rotation exceeded my expectations and I would highly recommend it to preventive medicine residents, as well as any residents planning on working in primary care. |
This AHRQ rotation was my first real exposure to federal level public health agencies and scope of practice and influence. I learned so much regarding resources, programs, and toolkits I hope to bring back to my home institution in the health safety net. Even though I was a remote rotating resident due to COVID-19, all of the AHRQ staff I interacted with were more than happy to have conversations with me about my interests within public health and their roles within AHRQ and CEPI supporting frontline clinicians such as myself. |
The rotation was very eye-opening into the processes and practices of the USPSTF and the incredible work that is required to produce sound and evidence-based guidelines. It was really interesting to learn details of the grading process and how the task force selects the grade according to the quality of data and direction of the data which are two separate and important pieces. I had the opportunity of sitting in on the USPSTF conference and listening to the deliberation around the recommendation and seeing how the TF comes to a final recommendation. It was excellent exposure to the skill, value, and application of critical appraisal. I am glad I took advantage of this opportunity. |
The rotation drastically improved my ability to critically appraise medical literature and understand of public health as it functions on a national level. |
Meeting all of the brilliant staff at AHRQ and seeing first hand their effort and commitment to facilitating the work carried out of the Task Force was very insightful. |
Exceptional rotation in partnership with intelligent and dedicated professionals who will guide you to learn about the important work of USPSTF and their broad impact on preventive medicine public health. A must do! |
The Medical Officers and AHRQ/USPSTF staff were incredibly helpful by identifying my professional interests and connecting me with individuals who work in fields of research and public health that matched my interests. |
I had a great time at AHRQ learning about the Task Force and systematic evidence review, population health, and applying my medical knowledge in a non-clinical setting. Truly a great learning experience. |
I had a wonderful experience with AHRQ and the USPSTF and I am very grateful toward APTR for making it possible! This rotation is a helpful dive into national health policy and evidence-based medicine for those who are looking to add to their preventive medicine skills toolkit. Truly a once in a lifetime type of opportunity! |
This is an excellent rotation that I highly recommend for any preventive medicine resident regardless of your career plans. It is well organized, gives a great understanding of what the USPSTF does, lets you get involved in research based guidelines, and the preceptor Dr. Sullivent is excellent! |
The APTR & AHRQ preventive medicine rotation with the USPSTF is an invaluable opportunity that will serve my patients and community well as primary care provider that can now attest to the immense effort to generate evidence-based preventive screening recommendations. |
This excellent rotation allowed me to directly contribute to key documents that impact public health and public policy on a large scale. Working with AHRQ medical officers as part of the Resident Rounds didactic series provided the opportunity for me to learn many different perspectives and to receive a better understanding of the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force methodology in making clinical screening recommendations for the general public. This rotation provides a fantastic training experience, and I would highly recommend this rotation to all preventive medicine residents. |
This was an excellent and invaluable opportunity. I had wonderful mentorship and was able to develop my skills in research and health communication. This rotation provided a unique insight into the evaluation of preventative interventions. I would highly recommend this rotation for anyone interested in public health or health policy. |
This rotation matched my interests perfectly at the intersection of public health and primary care. On a daily basis the Task Force grapples with important foundational questions in both public health and primary care, so this rotation was ideal for my dual residencies in family medicine and general preventive medicine. I would encourage any resident with an interest in the question of "why do we do what we do" in primary care to pursue this rotation for the amazing learning opportunity. It was a pleasure to work with a group of Task Force members and AHRQ medical officers with such great integrity. Our country places great trust in the USPSTF, and this rotation proved to me that the Task Force lives up to its noble charge. |
This rotation gave me the opportunity to learn about the important work that AHRQ and the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force are involved in. Understanding the stages in which a topic moves from nomination to a recommendation, and the rigor involved in the process has given me a greater appreciation for the work that is done here. I know that the skills I have acquired from recognizing the importance of messaging to the public, the necessary attention to detail when fact checking, or the communication and team effort required for the success of a project will help me in my future endeavors. This growth wouldn’t have been possible without the wonderful mentorship provided here. |

Excellent experience. I appreciate APTR's support in making this rotation possible. |
