Engaging Students through the Power of Community Mapping

Community Health Mapping Workshop

National Library of Medicine; Center for Public Service Communications; Bird’s Eye View GIS; Medical University of South Carolina

Have you witnessed the potential uses of mapping in public health but are intimidated by the technology or simply too busy to pursue it?

Building on the success of the 2016 annual meeting presentation, and due to popular demand, APTR is offering this hands-on training session for you to learn how and why to incorporate the Community Health Mapping (CHM) workflow into your research and training programs.

Attendees will learn and discuss novel concepts and methodologies for using low cost, open-source, intuitive mapping technology for students, educators and community organizations to better serve vulnerable or underserved populations. This interactive workshop will provide examples of academic health centers and community-based organizations using the CHM workflow to help visualize data and better understand and portray its  significance.

During this 4-hour hands-on workshop attendees will:

  •  Build a data collection form using Fulcrum
  • Use the data collection form to gather data from around the conference hotel
  • Map data previously collected during an exercise online in Carto
  • Practice mapping the data in QGIS

Learning Objectives

  1. Describe the Community Health Maps workflow which includes low-cost and open resources for community mapping and data visualization.
  2. Create a data collection tool on a mobile device that can be used to collect community data.
  3. Learn how to map data collected online in and on the desktop.

Space is limited.  Register today for this important workshop!
