Why Is CDC Doing This?

The NCIPC Scientific Reviewer and Advisor Database aims to enhance and strengthen NCIPC’s SEPs and our timeliness in selecting appropriate experts to serve on them.
How Does The Database Work?

This database will contain information extracted from the curriculum vitae (CV) of potential reviewers, including name, subject matter expertise, and level of experience. The information in the database is for internal CDC use only. As applicable, the reviewers perform the initial review, discussion, and evaluation of applications received in response to Notices of Funding Opportunity (NOFOs) for extramural research.

CEPH Invites Comments on Proposed Revised Accreditation Procedures

The Council on Education for Public Health (CEPH) invites review and comment on its proposed revised Accreditation Procedures. The call for comments is open until the close of business on Wednesday, May 10.

CEPH’s Accreditation Criteria document defines the standards by which schools and programs are assessed in the accreditation process. The Accreditation Procedures document, which is currently open for revision, defines the process by which CEPH carries out its accreditation functions.

Comments must be submitted to Mollie Mulvanity at mmulvanity@ceph.org using the comment form available on the CEPH website. Comments in letter or other form will not be accepted.

Highlights of the draft revisions:

Information has been substantially reorganized and condensed to remove repetition and improve clarity.

The procedures explicitly state concepts that reflect the Council’s consistent interpretation over time on a number of requirements in defining the unit of accreditation for PHP and SBP.

The procedures more explicitly define the public disclosures required of all units affiliated with CEPH to ensure accurate information about accreditation status.

CEPH proposes several changes to the initial application process:

Units seeking initial accreditation must attend a webinar that explains the process before submitting documents for Council review. This change intends to improve units’ experience and success in preparing documents for Council review.

The document that CEPH currently refers to as the “application” has been more accurately retitled “initial application submission” (IAS).

IAS content is updated to reflect revised criteria.

The procedures accurately describe, and formalize, the iterative process of submitting drafts of the IAS to CEPH staff to review for clarity and completion before submission to the Council.

The procedures require payment of a new IAS fee to address the time and effort spent with units preparing initial submissions for Council review.

CEPH clarifies and expands procedures relating to accrediting units located outside of North America. These changes address growing global interest in quality assurance and focus on ensuring that CEPH’s procedures recognize and reflect the cultural context of institutions outside of North America.

The procedures acknowledge the differing terminology used in universities outside of North America. Even in English-speaking nations, terms such as “faculty,” “school,” “college” and “department” have different meanings and connotations, or are sometimes not used at all.

Given CEPH’s experience with the structure of institutions outside of North America, the procedures define the expectation that most units outside of North America are eligible for accreditation only in the PHP or SBP categories, rather than the school of public health (SPH) category. Exceptions may be made in individual cases if the unit meets all requirements of a North American SPH.

Given the above concepts and the different institutional history and context for public health higher education outside of North America, the procedures clarify that accredited PHP outside of North America may sometimes be housed in a unit called a school of public health. When such PHP are accredited, the procedures define specific disclosure requirements to ensure that the unit does not suggest or communicate accreditation in the SPH category. This exception applies outside of North America only.

The procedures streamline the self-study review process by defining two reviewers for each preliminary self-study document: the team coordinator and the team chair.

The procedures clarify and streamline the complaint process for individuals with complaints against a CEPH-accredited unit or against CEPH itself.

Overview:

Between 1999-2014, nonopioid treatments
for chronic pain were used less frequently while the amount of opioids
prescribed in the United States quadrupled. Unfortunately, long-term opioid
use for chronic pain is associated with serious risks, including abuse,
dependence, and overdose. In addition, there is insufficient evidence to
determine whether pain relief, function, or quality of life improves with
    long-term opioid therapy.

The CDC Guideline for Prescribing Opioids
for Chronic Pain provides recommendations for safer and more effective
prescribing of opioids for chronic pain in patients 18 years of age and
older in outpatient settings outside of active cancer treatment, palliative
    care, and end-of-life care.

During this COCA Call, a case study will
be used to illustrate how clinicians can identify appropriate treatment
strategies for chronic pain. In addition, clinicians will learn about the
effectiveness and risks of nonopioid medications and nonpharmacologic
    treatments for chronic pain.

Objectives

•State the evidence related to
effectiveness and potential risks associated with nonopioid treatments for
    chronic pain.

•Outline nonpharmacologic and
nonopioid pharmacologic treatment options for various chronic pain
    conditions.

•Review patient evaluation methods
that can be used to identify the most appropriate treatment options for
    chronic pain.

•Describe the role of patient
beliefs and expectations, and value of exercise, education, and nonopioid
drug treatments in the management of musculoskeletal pain complaints.

The National Cancer Institute
(NCI), the largest of the 27 institutes and centers comprising the National
Institutes of Health (NIH), is the Federal Government's principal agency for
cancer research and training. The NCI coordinates the National Cancer
Program, which conducts and supports research, training, health information
dissemination, and other programs with respect to the cause, diagnosis,
prevention, and treatment of cancer, rehabilitation from cancer, and the
continuing care of cancer patients and the families of cancer patients.

health information dissemination is key to raising public awareness about new
cancer treatments, support for cancer patients and their families, and
prevention strategies. To that end, in 1975 the NCI established the
Health Communications Internship Program (HCIP) to attract and develop individuals interested in careers in health
communications and science writing.

The HCIP gives highly
qualified graduate students and recent graduate degree recipients the

NOW AVAILABLE - CEPH Accreditation Criteria for Standalone Baccalaureate Programs in Public Health

mso-fareast-font-family:"Times New Roman"">The Council on Education for Public
Health (CEPH) is pleased to announce the release of <a href="http://ceph.org/assets/SBP-Criteria.pdf" title="http://ceph.org/assets/SBP-Criteria.pdf

Criteria for Standalone Baccalaureate Programs in Public Health, adopted June
2013. These standards are the culmination of a <a href="http://ceph.org/constituents/programs-baccalaureate-level/history-and-overview/" title="http://ceph.org/constituents/programs-baccalaureate-level/history-and-overview/

effort to extend quality assurance opportunities to the ever-growing
number of standalone baccalaureate public health programs (SBP). SBP are
defined as programs that are not affiliated with graduate-level public health

The Council would like to extend
special thanks to all those who participated in the development of these
criteria over the years, including participants in the 2011 Thought Leaders
meeting, criteria development workgroups, focus groups and all those who
submitted comments during the comment period.

Feedback received by the Council
during the public comment period was extremely helpful. The Council directly
incorporated many specific suggestions into the criteria, and all suggestions
will inform the development of guidance and training documents. The criteria
must be sufficiently flexible to apply well to baccalaureate public health
programs of all types, including those with various areas of content focus and those
with professional versus pre-professional intended outcomes, and this principle
often guided the Council’s decision about which comments should be integrated
into the document.

The Council will add rationale,
information and examples related to criteria interpretation in the Frequently
Asked Questions (FAQ) section of the CEPH website. New FAQs, as well as other
opportunities for information and technical assistance, will be developed and
made available throughout the summer and fall.

We look forward to working with all
interested baccalaureate programs and ask for your patience as we prepare all
templates, application forms and FAQ/technical assistance documents.
