In 2000, graduation requirements for programs placed a greater emphasis on the research project (43%) and thesis (48%) compared to 2017. There was a 22% drop in completing the research project and a 27% drop in completing a thesis from 2000 to 2017. From 2000 to 2017 the culminating examination as a graduation requirement remained consistent, however the greatest change occurred from 2000 to 2017 where the demand for completing a practicum for graduation increased by 76%. This demonstrates a growing emphasis on field experience to prepare MPH students for the workforce.

Most public health programs require community-based experiences to graduate. Around 25% of programs offer community-based experiences but not as a graduation requirement and 70% require participation in community based experiences in order to graduate. Only about 6% of public health programs do not offer community-based experiences. It is important to note that the 2016 CEPH accreditation criteria now require all MPH students to complete “applied practice experiences” in order to graduate.
