Regarding distance learning methods, between asynchronous distance learning and synchronous distance learning, there is a preference for the asynchronous learning method since it allows for pacing one’s learning according to an individual student’s own needs. From 2000 to 2017 asynchronous distance learning has gone up by 18% from 30% in 2000 to 48% in 2017. Synchronous distance learning requires the student and professor to be available at the same time and is a less flexible teaching method for students which has resulted in a slight drop in this teaching method by roughly 5% from 30% in 2011 to 25% in 2017. Available technologies in 2000 may also have played a role in the offering of more synchronous distance learning.
