The APTR undergraduate public health education initiative aims to fulfill the National Academies of Sciences Institute of Medicine (IOM) recommendation that all undergraduates should have access to education in public health. APTR has taken the lead to develop the following activities:

Collaborative Integration of Public Health Content
into Undergraduate Education
APTR provided funding to members of the APTR Council of Graduate Programs in Public Health to facilitate increased involvement of graduate level
public health programs in the advancement of undergraduate public health curricula.Qualifying Council member programs are to collaborate with faculty from undergraduate colleges within the same institution or neighboring or regional liberal education institutions to develop, pilot and evaluate undergraduate public
health, global health, and epidemiology courses.
Innovations in Public Health Education Awards
Funded through the APTR-CDC Cooperative Agreement, awards were given to thirteen institutions to increase the design, teaching and evaluation of introductory undergraduate course work in public health and epidemiology and to encourage faculty engaged in undergraduate public health teaching to share experiences and exchange tools.

Consensus Conference for Undergraduate Public Health Education
The recommendation for undergraduate public health education was a critical outcome of the November 2006 Consensus Conference on Undergraduate Public Health Education.

Undergraduate Curriculum Development Institutes
On July 14-15, 2008 APTR provided 45 selected teams with the tools needed to develop coherent undergraduate curricula in public health (in the form of majors, minors or certificate programs), including core courses, electives and experiential learning opportunities.

The July 9-10, 2007 workshop provided 78 faculty members from 39 selected institutions the opportunity to attend a concentrated two-day workshop in Washington, DC to focus on one of three core breakout sessions to enhance their ability to teach Public Health 101, Epidemiology 101, or Global Health 101.
Undergraduate Public Health Day
On February 22, 2008
as part of a special activity of the APTR annual meeting TEACHING PREVENTION 2008, APTR provided opportunities to collaborate with other faculty members teaching undergraduate public health courses and introduced faculty to a range of introductory curriculum in public health while providing best practices and skill building workshops to assist faculty in designing undergraduate public health courses.
