Researchers and Their Communities: Rewarding the “Meaning” in Meaningful Community Engagement

Keynote Speakers:

  • Lynn Blanchard, PhD, MPH, who is Director of the Carolina Center for Public Service at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and also holds an appointment as Clinical Associate Professor in Health Behavior and Health Education at the UNC School of Public Health
  • Kalvin White, PhD, who is a leader of Diné Science, Math, and Technology in the Department of Diné Education, and a member of the Navajo Nation Institutional Review Board.

Scholarships
Funding for 35 scholarships and travel for community partners and researchers will be provided.  The Coordinating Committee will review the registrations and select recipients.

    First Keynote Speech by Dr. Lynn Blanchard
  • 10:00 am – 11:30 am
    Breakout Session I: Rewarding Research Partners Introduction by Dr. Tollestrup
    • Choose one of the following:
      a) Community Rewards: “Improving Health through Culturally-Centered Research.” Facilitated dialogue with Drs. Kalvin White, Nina Wallerstein and colleagues
      b) Faculty Rewards: “Serving Communities through CBPR and policy making: Getting to Tenure, Promotion, and an Outstanding Annual Review.” Facilitated dialogue with Dr. Tassy Parker, Robert Valdez, Lynn Blanchard and colleagues
  • 11:30 am – 1:00 pm

  • 1:00 pm – 2:00 pm
    Second Keynote Speech Dr. Kalvin White Introduction by Dr. Tassy Parker
  • 2:00 pm – 3:30 pm
    Breakout Session II: Challenges and Solutions to Partnering with Communities Introduction by Dr. Nina Wallerstein
    • Choose one of the following: Lessons learned
      a) Community-based clinicians and community partners (speakers TBD)
      b) Community/Academic Partnerships: Research Teams and Stories Facilitated dialog with Drs. Lisa Cacari-Stone and Nina Wallerstein a. Latino team: (TBD) b. Native team: Family Listening Program, Lorenda Belone and colleagues
  • 3:30 pm – 4:00 pm

  • 4:00 pm – 5:15 pm
    Discussion and Action Steps how to get to the win- mutual reward structures: Drs. Wallerstein, Parker, Cacari-Stone and Tollestrup

  • $50 Faculty APTR Member
  • $95 non-Member

Scholarships for registration and travel for Community Members and Students are available. Lunch and snacks provided. 

 

Abstract for poster session due April 15, 2010.

 

Application for registration and/or travel scholarships due before April 20, 2010 and will be awarded on a “first-come, first-served” basis. 

 

Parking passes will be provided for those that indicate in the “special considerations” section of the registration that they will need one.
