Agenda Overview:

  • Broaden knowledge of Native American history and culture as it informs concepts of trust and development of partnerships with researchers.
  • Explore techniques and strategies to improve co-learning between researchers and Native American communities.
  • Demystify the research process to allow Native American communities and academics to build authentic partnerships for sustainable and relevant research projects to improve population health.
  • Identify opportunities for meaningful engagement through collaborative projects between researchers and Indian, Urban and Tribal communities in the Northern Plains region of the United States (Nebraska, South Dakota, North Dakota, and Iowa).

Speaker Bios:

Lisa Dillon

Lisa Dillon is the Oglala Sioux Tribal Health Administrator. She serves on the Advisory Committee for the Northern Plains Tribal Epidemiology Center.

Ayman El-Mohandes, M.B.B.Ch., M.D., M.P.H. Dr.

Ayman El-Mohandes is the Dean of the College of Public Health at the University of Nebraska Medical Center. He also a Professor of Epidemiology; Pediatrics; and Obstetrics/Gynecology.

Bill Freeman, M.D., M.P.H., CIP

Dr. Freeman is the Director of Tribal Community Health Programs and Human Protections Administrator at Northwest Indian College. In these roles, he serves as teacher, IRB administrator, and currently as the principal investigator for two ongoing diabetes research projects. Dr. Freeman is the past Director of Research with the Indian Health Service and has served in numerous leadership and advocacy roles for American Indian and tribal communities. His research and clinical experience have focused on the health of native populations, diabetes, community and participatory research, and the ethics of research involving vulnerable populations. Jennifer Giroux, M.D., M.P.H.

Dr. Jennifer Giroux is an enrolled member of the Rosebud Sioux Tribe, a mother of 3 young women, a medical epidemiologist for Indian Health Service Division of Epidemiology and Disease Prevention and placed at the Aberdeen Area Tribal Chairmen’s Health Board. Currently, she is the Acting Director of Northern Plains Tribal Epidemiology Center.

Jennifer Larsen, M.D.

Dr. Larsen is the Associate Dean for Clinical Research for the College of Medicine and Director of Clinical and Translational Research at the University of Nebraska Medical Center. She also serves as the section chief of Diabetes, Endocrinology, and Metabolism and was directly involved in developing the UNMC-The Nebraska Medical Center Diabetes Center. She serves on the advisory committee for the Northern Plains Tribal Epidemiology Center. She also is the program director for the Center’s IHS- and NIH-funded Native American Research Center for Health grant.

Magda Peck, ScD

Dr. Peck is the Associate Dean for Community Engagement and Public Health Practice in the College of Public Health at the University of Nebraska Medical Center. Furthermore, she is a Professor of Pediatrics and Public Health. Dr. Peck is the founding CEO and Senior Advisor of CityMatCH, the leading national public health organization dedicated to improving the health and well-being of women, children and families in America’s urban communities. She is also the founding Director of the UNMC/UNOmaha Graduate Program in Public Health and directs the Great Plains Public Health Leadership Institute.

Shireen Rajaram, Ph.D.

Dr. Rajaram is the Director of the Center for Reducing Health Disparities and Associate Professor in the Department of Health Promotion, Social and Behavioral Health in the College of Public Health at the University of Nebraska Medical Center. She is a medical sociologist and her research and teaching interests have focused on the health of underserved communities, women's health and community based and participatory research.

Alan Trachtenberg, M.D.

Dr. Trachtenberg directs the Research Programs of the Indian Health Service. Prior to this he served as Medical Director for the Office of Pharmacologic and Alternative Therapies at the Center for Substance Abuse Treatment (CSAT), Substance Abuse & Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). Dr. Trachtenberg came to CSAT from the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) where he served as a Medical Officer from 1991 to 1998. He is a Board-Certified specialist in General Preventive Medicine, Public Health and Medical Toxicology, as well as a Fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians.

Roger Trudell

Roger Trudell is the Chairman of the Santee Sioux Tribe of Nebraska. He has also served on the Aberdeen Area Tribal Chairman's Health Board over the years.
