Should Undergraduate Public Health be a Prerequisite for Medical School?

November 6, 2007

10:30 am - 12:00

Omni Shoreham Hotel/AAMC

Washington, DC

The Institute of Medicine has recommended that "all undergraduates have access to education in public health." Recommendations of the Consensus Conference on Undergraduate Public Health Education encouraged all 4-year colleges and universities to offer introductory courses such as "Public Health 101", "Epidemiology 101" and "Global Health 101".  The Healthy People Curriculum Task Force, convened by APTR including representation from seven health professions organizations, has developed the Clinical Prevention and Population Health curriculum framework. The curriculum framework is designed to incorporate prevention curriculum into the education of clinical health professions. The panel will examine both of these approaches and discuss options for integrating them into medical education prior to and/or as part of medical school.
