Woodie Kessel, MD, MPH
Dr. Kessel, community pediatrician, has been a senior child health science advisor on public health, health policy, and child and family health matters for 30 years. He has served the White House and Cabinet Secretaries in five administrations, eight Health and Human Services Secretaries, eight Assistant Secretaries for Health, and six Surgeon Generals. Improving birth outcomes, achieving healthy childhood growth and development, eliminating child health disparities, preventing childhood overweight, promoting a healthy and safe environment, preventing adolescent risky behavior, advancing pediatric and public professional education, science-based policy analysis, public health systems solutions, healthy children objectives, preventing child maltreatment and social determinants of child and family health promotion and disease prevention are all part of his community practice.
During his tenure as Assistant Surgeon General Dr. Kessel helped develop such efforts as the President's Healthy Start Initiative - a community-based initiative to reduce infant mortality, the President's State Children's Health Insurance Program - the largest health insurance expansion for children in nearly 30 years, the President's Task Force on Children's Environmental Health and Safety - a cabinet-wide group focused on child environmental health, the National Children's Study - a longitudinal study of the health and development of more than 100,000 children, and the President's Safe and Bright Futures Initiative - a community-based initiative to break the cycle of violence among children witnessing domestic violence. He has partnered with numerous organizations to promote child health including Sesame Workshop to improve healthy life styles for children; Shaping America's Youth to increase physical activity and improve nutrition, the American Academy of Pediatrics to improve post graduate pediatric education, office-based research, assure Bright Futures, and Healthy Tomorrows for children and families in the community. Recognized for his multiple contributions on behalf of America's children and families, Dr. Kessel was honored by the American Academy of Pediatrics with their Excellence in Public Service Award.
Dr. Kessel earned his MPH from the Johns Hopkins University, his MD from the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, and his BS in Electrical Engineering from Drexel University. Dr. Kessel was a RWJ Clinical Scholar and Ambulatory Pediatrics Fellow at the Children's Hospital National Medical Center. Dr. Kessel completed his pediatric residency and primary care fellowship in the Department of Pediatrics, Boston City Hospital. Dr. Kessel is married and has two adult children. Dr. Kessel is currently Founder and President of e-maginative health systems solutions, a consulting firm helping children and families become healthier by being more physically active, eating healthy, getting proper health services, and making healthy and wise choices. His practice incorporates effective advocacy and partnership for the advancement of public and private enterprise, the realization of cultural and discipline diversity, the promotion of community commitment and team spirit, the attainment of performance-based systems results, and the improvement of child, family, and community health.
